In these days of high fuel prices and consumption, the world is looking for alternate sources of cleaner and less expensive energy (want free electricity?). The most abundant source of free (almost) is the natural lighting from the sun. The video below explains what solar energy is and how we can convert sunlight to electricity.
Now that you have better idea of what Solar Power is, it becomes obvious that someone needs to install and wire these systems directly to the business or homeowner. This is where the solar power electrician comes in.
The solar panels produce DC current, and this needs to be converted to AC for typical use. This is done through inverters. These are electronic circuits that take the DC and convert it to AC at some specified voltage. Inverters come in different sizes and capacities, but they all do pretty much the same thing.
A typical assembly would have the photovoltaic (solar) panels wired to an inverter and then this would feed directly to the line side of a distribution panel. Some systems may charge a series of DC batteries before being converted to AC.
The video below shows a residential installation of a solar power system.
This is an fast growing field that is in short supply of capable and knowledgeable electricians. Most of today's electricians haven't even thought of installing a solar power system, let alone installed one. Although these systems were very popular only in fair weather areas, the need for cheaper electricity along with advances in photocell efficiency has expanded their applications to most areas and countries.
Since the field has relatively high demand and low supply (trained installers & electricians), it becomes obvious that it's also a very profitable area to specialize in. For those of you that may be looking for an opportunity to jump over your competition, this may the way.
