So you're looking for information about becoming a Journeyman Electrician.
Let's take a closer look at what a Journeyman Electrician (sometimes referred to
as a mechanic) actually does.
They must able to install
conduit, lighting and wiring systems in residential and commercial locations.
They must be able to test and troubleshoot all types of electrical systems. He or she will have worked under the supervision of a Master Electrician for a
period of about 4-5 years and most likely completed a thorough apprenticeship
program.
In the absence of a Master, a Journeyman will eventually be responsible for supervising several other apprentices and less
experienced Journeymen on a job site.
Many States require that a Journeyman be licensed and some even have an licensing exam. Of course it won't be a rigorous as the Master's licensing exam, but nonetheless it is will test upon many of the same areas and is pretty extensive.
If you work in a
State that requires Journeyman licensing and examination, you should definitely
consider using a test preparation book. Try Stallcup's Journeyman Electrician Study Guide .
It's pretty popular and he's been around awhile, so he's very familiar with
the types of questions asked on the test. The only issue that some people have with this book, is that you'll have to buy (separately) the answer key. Without it, you can't be sure if you're doing the problems correctly.
If you don't like that one, don't worry because there are
plenty more good study guides to pick from.
Another book that's used regularly by trade schools for electrical studies and also by individuals for exam preparation is the American Electrician's Handbook. It's very comprehensive, but many have found it somewhat difficult to use as a study guide, and merely use it as a reference tool. So check the reviews on this book before you decide.
Try Mike Holt's Electrician's Exam Preparation, he's been doing this for ages, and has an excellent reputation for doing it well. He sells enough of these exam prep courses that you won't have to worry about being taught obsolete material, and best of all, people who have used these study guides have passed their tests.
For an online electrical curriculum / course that will prepare you for your Journeyman exam, check out the Penn Foster Career School.
Many States have no Journeyman licensing or registration requirement so you
won't have to worry about any testing. If you entered an apprenticeship program,
at it's completion, you will probably be issued a Journeyman card.
If you're in
a union then you definitely will be issued a card when you reach that status.
After being a Journeyman for a while, you will probably be ready to
go on to take your Master or Limited / Unlimited Electrician's license.
