Have you ever heard of the term " Electrical Device "? When someone mentions an electrical device, they typically are referring to a receptacle (outlet), switch, GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) or timer.
Devices come in all different types, sizes and colors. Some of these are:
Receptacles: Standard, Decora, Surface Mounted, and they come in 15 Amp, 20 Amp, 30 Amp, 50 Amp, 60 Amp, etc.
Switches are Standard and Decora, Weather Proof and come in multiple Amperage ratings just as the receptacles.
GFCI: These are receptacles with are power cut-off (button) on the face of them. This button, will pop and cut power if it senses a neutral overload.
This basically means that if you are wet and touch the outlet, it will shut off the power before you get electrocuted.
That's why these devices are mandatory in and around wet areas (kitchens counters, bathrooms, outside, etc.).
The important thing to remember is that these do not sense an overload or short circuit on the hot wire side, but merely sense the current coming off the neutral wire.
